Sunday 22nd November

redoing the uv

when I opened the scene that contained my teacher model today, the UV’s were everywhere for some reason they hadn’t saved correctly, so had to redo them.

I also redid the UV’s of my handsome man model as  my original UV’s had too many seams

Creating the UV’s for the teacher model

I found a better way of laying out UV’s, usually when I UV map a model, I focus on utilising the space as much as possible, i do this by placing uv’s on top of each other, overlapping one half of a symmetrical shell on top of the other half. unfortunately this results in a lot of seams and can cause texture errors if the mesh deforms so this i focused on creating as few seams as possible

Wednsday 28th October

screencap 2015-10-28 14-56-30.jpg

I tried to imagine what scrunched-up paper in the shape of a stereotypical handsome man would look like, and designed my concept around that.

when my team explained that they wanted it to look like Rachel’s concepts she made of other character, I figured that it would be a good idea to simply alter the child model that I had previously modeled.

so now that we have our animatic is complete and finalised, we need to fresh out the contains of our scenes a bit more. I wanted to help out with enviroment design, so drew up some concepts of the construction scene.

since the statue is going to come to life, I drew the child fascinated in what is happening, i also tried to use the simplest of shapes in my drawing this time, as suggested by Niall, this is to speed up my drawing and to help me create a better gestures.

in my fist concept, because the previous scene has nothing in the background, i drew a more barren landscape, my team requested that I add more to the construction site and explained that it didn’t make sense for construction work to happen in the middle of the dessert.

I would have done my concepts on pc but I didn’t have the pen for my tablet.

For this week, one of my task was to model the child for a scene towards the end of our animation, I really wanted the topology for this model to be correct, however, I was a bit rusty, having to look over my notes and past models to remember how the topology of some body parts should look .

Monday 26th October – Talk with tutor’s / group conversation

During our scrum we talked with conànn, in his feed back he felt that the  Child needs to look more like he’s trying to grab the balloon, Aohdan suggested that it might be good idea to use cinema4D for the transitions, however, Niall has experiance of using cinema4D and explained that its capabilities are limited, making it difficult to use, also conann explained that maya is more than adequate to recreate the look of cinema4D’s renders

Conann also gave a solution to Aohdan’s query on how to make polygon clouds soft, adding a glow to the clouds should give it a softer appearance.

Another thing conann mentioned is that Imagination and creativity are two different things, i guess he felt that was important as he didn’t want us creating too much imaginative imagery, oppose to imagery that conveys design.

looking at the tasks due for this week we decided that the ‘Builds assets’ task was abit too brode and that we needed to identify and specific models, we also talked about the geometry of our models as it plays a part in the astetic of the final product, Niall explained that we want it to look low-poly, but we dont want the geometry to be too low-poly, we can do this with textures to insure proper deformation

Final notes on of the meeting were on,
The overall scene colours – possibility of using of cream rather then orange for construction scene and How do we want the construction models to come out of the ground.

Friday 23rd October

Modeling the paper fortune teller proved to be a bit more complicated but I think I managed to model it well enough while it had no thickness, by creating edges where the paper would fold, i used the rotate transform to fold the polygons into place

screencap 2015-10-23 12-51-52
screencap 2015-10-23 17-14-19

however when i tried this with a thicker version it became extremely frustrating so i return to my previous model,

screencap 2015-10-23 16-01-52

I had to extract the top of the fortune teller from bottom and extrude them separately, this gave me thicker version while preventing any clipping.

Thursday 22nd October

My thoughts on today’s Project progress presentations

Team Fox-out
Working on a 2D irish language education game
Currently rigging, rig claimed to be complete, improted into unity, sites scouted.

Team Surf Badger
Working on the BBC project
Claimed to have done a lot of research and rescripted their whole animation, however, their script still takes a lot away from the main focus of the project which is the line.

Team M2R
Working on the BBC project
Their animation is a live action so they have made a small video of them acting out their animation. They’ve also finished the story boards for their animation, as well as, a slight bit of video tracking. A small problem they are have is that they need their audio to be of professional quality, so they need to source a voice actor.

Team Waste Not, Want Not
Not much to say about this group, they’re doing a completely different project from everyone else, they are attempting to create a solution to help reduce the amount of food wastage. The project is very research intensive so they havent started designing anything yet, their presentation was just about what they had found out so far.

Team Bong
they seem to haver a lot of concepts, however it doesn’t seem like they have done much work along the lines of production, nothing modeled yet just a video that is close to what they want to make, their idea seems simple enough but is will require a lot of modeling, and will need to be
well rendered.

Team RTE
claim to have finished all of the their filming pre-vis and animatic, everything being mapped out, now all they need to do is model and place their character. However, after discussing this with Niall, he explains that he feels that they do not have enough footage and will likely end up having to redo all the filming as when they attempt to obtain that extra footage when needed as the weather will have changed (possibly snow as their filming location is on top of a mountain and we are drawing closer to winter), meaning their old footage will not match.
